Buzz Lightyear is quite the space ranger and has a huge fan base. He is positive and believes his mission is to save others known for bravery and courage and rules are there for a purpose – to be followed. Due to the popularity of his TV show he has become the most famous of the Toy Story characters.
Did you know Buzz Lightyear actually went to outer space with real astronauts? Buzz accompanied the crew of the space shuttle STS-124 and remained on the International Space Station for six months. This was part of a NASA toys-in-space education program and to take part in an experiment and appear in a video downlink from space. Buzz dined with the 10 astronauts daily and returned from the space station on September 11, 2009.
Buzz’s character was inspired by Buzz Aldrin who was aboard Apollo 11 and presented a figure of Buzz during a speech at NASA.
Buzz’s suit is well equipped to protect him against anything he may encounter in outer space, both weather and perhaps other aliens. His helmet is retractable allowing him the ability to breath easily if there is a lack of oxygen and especially if he steps out onto other planets. It can be activated with the touch of a button located on his chest.
Other space gadgets are positioned on both arms. The right arm panel is where the weapons system is located revealing a laser. The mission log is located on the left arm wrist area, along with oxygen gauges, and fuel gauge for the jet pack. There are a couple of versions available – one with the utility belt and one without.
Buzz Lightyear figure is manufactured by Thinkway Toys. Buzz has and probably will be popular for many years and is one of the most requested toys especially for Christmas. The Buzz Lightyear costume is also quite popular.
